Teacher Explains Why Social Media Ban for Kids Under 16 Is Necessary
Tech firms could be liable if they fail to block under-16s, while the plan also targets child-adult chats and endless scrolling.
On Monday, June 15, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a government proposal to ban social media for children under 16 in the United Kingdom, with implementation planned for 2027.
Starmer stated the decision reflects concerns that "social media is making children unhappy" and harming mental health by "exposing them to content that is dangerous."
The expected ban includes TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and YouTube, though YouTube Kids and Google Classroom may be exempt; technology firms will be held liable for compliance.
Russell Harris, head of Fulford School in York, welcomed the move, noting schools recognize this "is not an issue we can tackle alone" and requires coordinated implementation.
Experiences in Australia suggest enforcement challenges remain as other nations consider similar measures; a poll of more than 1,000 12- to 15-year-olds found 61% reported using workarounds to access banned platforms.
