UK drivers say this common road sign is unclear and 'not fit for purpose'
RAC says 93% of surveyed drivers want more closure details, as only 30% always follow yellow diversion signs.
- A new RAC poll reveals that 93 per cent of drivers want more detailed information on road closure signs, with 57 per cent considering current signage uninformative.
- Drivers report that "road ahead closed" signs are unclear, as 60 per cent say the signs fail to identify which road is closed, while 56 per cent note a lack of distance information.
- Among those who ignore diversion signs, 70 per cent rely on local knowledge to navigate, while 52 per cent simply follow their sat-navs; 58 per cent fear diversions take them too far out of their way.
- Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, warned that vague signage causes a lack of trust, noting that drivers ignoring official diversions can create traffic issues and "dangerous situations around essential maintenance works."
- Williams suggested that including key information such as which road is closed would increase driver trust and adherence; "Drivers ought to be able to trust the signs they are supposed to follow," he said.
