UK Foreign Secretary Condemns 10-Year Prison Term for British Couple in Iran
The British government calls the espionage charges against the Foremans politically motivated and vows to continue pressing Iran for their release after 13 months detained.
- On Feb 19, British foreign minister Yvette Cooper condemned the 10-year sentence as totally unjustifiable and vowed to press for their release, stating `We will pursue this case relentlessly with the Iranian government until we see Craig and Lindsay Foreman safely returned to the UK and reunited with their family.`
- State media said the pair have now been held for more than 13 months following their arrest on January 3 last year during a global motorcycle journey, accused of espionage.
- Family statements describe conditions including a three-hour trial on October 27 in which Lindsay Foreman and Craig Foreman were not allowed to present a defence, with extended periods of solitary confinement and limited legal access, according to Joe Bennett.
