UK commits £80 million to accelerate dementia diagnosis
Nine technologies will be tested, including seven-minute MRI scans and a 15-minute cognitive test, as officials seek faster diagnosis for 92% of patients within 18 weeks.
On Friday, UK Research and Innovation announced a plan to back nine new technologies with up to £80 million in funding to improve dementia diagnosis rates and cut waiting times exceeding a year.
With over 72,000 deaths in the United Kingdom last year, the Alzheimer's Society and The King's Fund urged "cancer-style" reform of dementia care pathways last month, stating "Dementia has been neglected for far too long."
The initiative aims to diagnose 92% of patients within 18 weeks of referral, up from about 60% today, by trialling 15-minute remote cognitive tests and faster MRI brain scans in the National Health Service .
Real-World assessments using a 'fail-fast' approach will ensure only effective technologies receive additional funding, aiming to reduce emergency hospital admissions and relieve pressure on the NHS.
Science Minister Chris McDonald called the work 'transformative' in getting people early treatment, while Dr Richard Oakley of the Alzheimer's Society said one in three people with dementia currently lack a diagnosis.
