UK approval for China's mega embassy in London was lawful, court rules

The court said ministers properly weighed security concerns and disclosure issues, clearing the way for a 22,000-square-metre embassy project.

  • On Friday, the High Court ruled Britain's approval for China's planned embassy at Royal Mint Court lawful, dismissing a legal challenge by the Royal Mint Court Residents' Association and allowing construction to proceed.
  • The RMCRA, representing families and businesses in about 100 properties, had argued the project posed security risks, citing fears regarding espionage, the enforcement of "draconian" Chinese laws, and fire-safety violations within the 22,000-square-metre site.
  • Mrs Justice Lieven, sitting with Lord Justice Dingemans, dismissed claims that undisclosed blast assessments caused unfairness, stating there was "no doubt" the Government considered the applicant's identity and found no evidence of human-rights violations.
  • While the MHCLG and Tower Hamlets council defended their process, saying they "conscientiously and carefully had regard" to resident concerns, the RMCRA confirmed they intend to appeal the High Court ruling.
  • Reports indicate plans for 208 secret rooms beneath the building, heightening concerns regarding the site's proximity to critical fibre-optic cables which MI5 previously warned could be vulnerable to espionage or attacks.
