Uganda’s longtime president will be sworn in for another term as his son emerges as de facto ruler
Museveni begins a seventh term as analysts say his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba is taking control of security and succession planning.
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was sworn in for a seventh term at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala before Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija.
Following a landslide victory in the January election with over 71 per cent of the vote, Museveni extended his rule into a fifth decade after first taking power in 1986.
Opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, rejected the results as "fake" and fled to the United States after alleging that "the regime wanted to eliminate me."
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the military chief and the president's son, is widely tipped as successor, though critics dub the plan the "Muhoozi Project" while associates call him the "final voice on defense and security matters."
Economic transformation, including upcoming oil production, remains a priority to reach high middle-income status, while the administration recently passed a Sovereignty Bill targeting individuals labeled "agents of foreigners" receiving foreign funding.
