Ugandan court denies bail to veteran opposition leader in treason case
UGANDA, AUG 8 – Kizza Besigye and co-accused denied bail in treason case despite lawyers citing over 180 days detention; judge ruled remand period started in civilian court on Feb 21, 2025.
- On Friday in Kampala, High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma refused bail to Col Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, who have been on remand since November last year at Luzira Prison.
- Initially charged in a military tribunal, Besigye was forcefully returned from Kenya last year before transfer to a civilian court.
- High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma noted that the 180-day remand period began on February 21 when charges were read, and he found they were 12 days short.
- Justice Emmanuel Baguma directed the court to list the case for an ‘immediate hearing’, and defence lawyer Erias Lukwago called the ruling ‘absurd’.
- Opposition leader Bobi Wine warned that the denial signals a crackdown ahead of next year’s election, as critics and rights groups voice concerns about silencing rivals amid President Yoweri Museveni's re-election bid.
