- On Wednesday, the Assam Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill, making Assam the third state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to clear the legislation. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass called Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to move it for passage following a day-long discussion.
- Aiming to establish common laws on personal matters like marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships irrespective of religion, the Assam government tabled the Bill on Monday seeking to ban polygamy and make live-in registration compulsory.
- Punitive measures include seven years imprisonment for bigamy or polygamy and three months jail for failing to register live-in relationships, while persons belonging to Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam gain exemption from the Bill's provisions.
- Opposition members moved to the Well of the House and protested after Speaker Dass rejected their demand that the Bill be sent to a select committee for wider consultation, while ruling members voted in favor amid slogans of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Jai Shree Ram'.
