Uber Offers Robotaxis in Houston to Take On Waymo
Uber will own and operate the fleet, and the companies are testing 100 autonomous vehicles in Houston ahead of the rollout.
On Wednesday, Uber Technologies Inc. announced plans to launch a premium robotaxi service in Houston by mid-2027, marking the second market for its partnership with Lucid Group Inc. and autonomous vehicle startup Nuro Inc.
Investment in the partnership has grown to $500 million, with Uber committing to deploy at least 35,000 electric SUVs equipped with Nuro's self-driving technology across multiple markets.
Uber has secured a 50,000-square-foot depot in Houston featuring 40 fast chargers and 15 maintenance bays to manage charging, repairs, and cleaning for the autonomous fleet.
Rival Alphabet-owned Waymo currently leads the market, operating commercial services in 11 cities including Houston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, positioning the trio as a direct competitor.
Expanding the program to dozens of cities in coming years remains a priority, with the ride-hailing giant also partnering with Rivian to deploy up to 50,000 R2s by 2031.
