Uber to Spend $100M on Robotaxi Fast-Charging Stations
Uber will build hundreds of fast-charging hubs to support robotaxi fleets, partnering with EVgo and others to guarantee charger utilization and improve fleet uptime.
- On Wednesday, Uber Technologies Inc. said it will invest more than $100 million to develop autonomous-vehicle charging hubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and Dallas.
- Earlier this month, Uber backed a capital-intensive autonomous-vehicle strategy and said owning chargers lowers costs, improves efficiency, and keeps vehicles on the road longer, Uber said.
- Uber is striking utilization-guarantee deals with EVgo Inc., Electra, Hubber Ltd., and Ionity GmbH while building DC fast chargers at autonomous depots and pit stops, guaranteeing usage and potentially paying fines if targets aren’t met.
- These deals are expected to support the rollout of hundreds of new chargers and help justify more than 500,000 globally, amid share performance down 14% this year.
- This year, Uber plans to launch Lucid and Nuro robotaxis in the Bay Area and Volkswagen AG autonomous vans in Los Angeles, expecting AVs in at least 10 cities by end of 2026.
