UNITED STATES, AUG 12 – Uber received 400,181 reports of sexual misconduct from 2017 to 2022, with most involving less serious incidents, while serious assaults reportedly declined by 44%, company says.
- An investigation by The New York Times found that between 2017 and 2022, Uber received approximately 400,000 reports related to sexual abuse or inappropriate behavior during U.S. rides, averaging one such report every eight minutes.
- The high volume includes mostly unaudited reports, many minor, while court documents indicate more incidents occurred than Uber publicly disclosed, including roughly 12,500 serious assaults.
- Uber has implemented various safety measures, such as real-time location monitoring, emergency response buttons, and optional audio or video recording; however, many of these features are optional due to expenses and legal/privacy concerns, and internal documents reveal ongoing underreporting of incidents.
