Uber partners with China's Pony.ai for 2,000 robotaxis in Europe

Uber and Pony.ai will add 2,000 self-driving taxis and expand service to four more European cities and the Middle East, the companies said.

  • On Thursday, Uber Technologies and Pony.ai announced an expanded partnership to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe and the Middle East, scaling their autonomous vehicle operations globally.
  • Building on their existing commercial service in Zagreb, Croatia, launched in 2026 with local operator Verne, the companies leverage this hybrid model to expand into additional European cities rapidly.
  • Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Autonomous Mobility & Delivery at Uber, stated the model integrates Pony.ai's L4 autonomous technology with Uber's platform, noting "next chapter for autonomous mobility is about moving from individual launches to repeatable commercial scale."
  • Uber, which partners with Pony.ai in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, aims "to become the world's leading commercialization platform for autonomous vehicles," CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said earlier this month.
  • Alphabet-Backed operator Waymo leads globally with around 5,000 vehicles, while rivals WeRide and Baidu Apollo Go ramp up testing and operational plans across Europe to compete for market share.
