Uber Launches AI Gig Platform With Jobs for PhDs
Uber pilots AI training gigs paying up to $1 for short tasks to diversify income as driver roles face automation risks, with over 100 million trips using similar tasks in India.
- Last month, Uber said it would start a pilot program offering AI training gigs in the US, and Dara Khosrowshahi announced this at the Only on Uber 2025 conference in Washington, D.C., calling Uber a platform for work.
- Khosrowshahi has pitched Digital Tasks as a way to help drivers displaced by robotaxis after a successful beta in India convinced Uber to expand trials across the US before the end of 2025.
- Drivers can opt in through the Driver app's Work Hub to record voice clips or upload photos, with $0.50 to $1 payments credited within 24 hours, Uber said.
- `We think this can ultimately be another profitable line of business for us`, Khosrowshahi said, describing Digital Tasks as an opportunity amid changing work and noting pay varies by task complexity despite driver pay concerns.
- The data-labeling market was valued at nearly $4 billion in 2024 and forecasts project it will exceed $17 billion by 2030, while Uber pursues 100,000 robotaxis, showing tensions between training work and automation.
