Uber Gives Parents the Option to Livestream Their Teens’ Rides
Parents can watch a teen’s ride in real time through the driver’s selfie camera, and Uber said the feature is now in nine U.S. markets.
- Uber Technologies Inc. launched an optional livestreaming feature on Tuesday for Teens ages 13 to 17, allowing Parents to view their children's rides in real time to provide "peace of mind."
- Teens have used the service since 2023, with the program now operating in more than 50 countries and offering safety tools including ride tracking and PIN verification.
- Drivers must opt in to enable the feature, which uses a front-facing smartphone camera to record the backseat; Parents receive a push notification if video is available once the trip begins.
- Encrypted video is stored on Uber's servers for 14 days, with Ashu Manohar, Uber's director of product management, telling Good Morning America the company accesses the decryption key only to investigate safety incidents.
- Currently tested in nine markets including Atlanta and Phoenix, Uber plans a nationwide rollout in the coming weeks, timing the expansion to coincide with back-to-school season.
