The Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tuesday Night — How To See It At Its Best
NORTHERN HEMISPHERE, AUG 11 – The Perseid meteor shower peaks with up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions but moonlight will reduce visibility to about 10 to 20 meteors, the American Meteor Society said.
- On the nights of August 12 and 13, 2025, NASA said the Perseid meteor shower peaks, with 50 to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.
- Caused by Earth’s passage through a debris trail from comet Swift-Tuttle , the shower has been active since July 17, 2025, and lasts until August 24, 2025.
- According to the American Meteor Society, due to moonlight, only 25% of peak rates may be visible, or 10 to 20 meteors per hour, despite many fireballs shining clearly.
- Observers in India can watch from northern and northeastern areas and dark-sky reserves, with rural locations away from city lights offering the best views.
- Looking ahead, astronomers are already marking calendars for a potential Perseid meteor storm in 2028 and the moon-free Geminid meteor shower in December.
