Tyre in southern Lebanon marks Muharram holy month after destruction from Israel-Hezbollah war
Hundreds in the coastal city mourned Imam Hussein and local war dead as portraits of Hezbollah leaders and banners covered the rubble.
On Friday, Shiite Muslims gathered in the battered city of Tyre for a Muharram mourning ceremony, where attendees wore black and wept during religious sermons honoring fallen relatives.
Israeli airstrikes have devastated southern Lebanon, killing almost 4,000 people according to the Health Ministry, while over one million remain displaced by the Israel-Hezbollah war.
Organizer Sheikh Abdulkareem Rahi stated, "no human mind can bear all of that" without faith in Imam Hussein's teachings, while residents placed banners naming Hussein on the ruins of their homes.
Mourners draw strength from Imam Hussein and his 72 companions who fell at Karbala in the seventh century; Sheikh Ibrahim Qassir of Deir Qanoun noted these teachings provide "an institution" in their values.
Although Israel and Hezbollah agreed to halt fighting Friday, many in Lebanon remain skeptical; the United States-brokered ceasefire with Iran aims to end hostilities, yet Hezbollah maintains it will continue fighting if Israeli strikes persist.
