Typhoon Dolphin hits Japan's Okinawa, China shuts ports ahead of landfall

- On Saturday, Typhoon Dolphin lashed Japan's Okinawa Prefecture, injuring five people and cutting power to 14,000 buildings. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the storm was moving northwest at 15 kph, roughly 160 km northwest of Kume Island.
- Ahead of the storm's expected arrival on China's east coast between late Sunday and early Monday, officials in Zhejiang province halted port operations and suspended 162 ferry routes. The forecast indicates winds of 38-45 metres per second.
- Regional travel faced significant disruptions as Taiwan cancelled 63 international flights, while ANA and Japan Airlines suspended services to the region. Ningbo Lishe International Airport in Zhejiang will halt operations late Saturday and suspend all flights on Sunday.
- Beijing ordered ships in the Taiwan Strait to follow traffic control instructions, measures Taipei denounced as "ridiculous." Taipei asserted that Beijing has no right to restrict access to international waters.
- Forecasters expect strong winds and heavy rain to affect eastern China through August 12, including parts of Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta. Some areas of eastern Zhejiang could receive more than 600 mm of rain.
