Type 2 Diabetes Rates ‘Rising Twice as Fast in Younger Women’
Diabetes UK says only 57% of women with gestational diabetes get annual HbA1c tests, leaving many at higher risk undetected.
Data compiled by Diabetes UK reveals a 47 per cent increase in type 2 diabetes diagnoses among women under 40 between 2017/18 and 2023/24, rising twice as fast as in older women.
Gestational diabetes, which impacts between 10 and 20 per cent of pregnant women, typically disappears after birth, yet inadequate postnatal care is a significant contributor to escalating type 2 diabetes rates, Diabetes suggests.
NHS England's first annual gestational diabetes audit, published last year, showed only 57 per cent of women had annual HbA1c tests after diagnosis; 11 per cent developed prediabetes within a year, while 15 per cent developed type 2 diabetes within 10 years.
Colette Marshall, chief executive at Diabetes UK, wrote to women's health minister Baroness Merron calling for urgent action, stating support for women who have had gestational diabetes "must not be overlooked."
One teacher from Somerset reported receiving "little or no follow-up care," noting she has not had a postnatal diabetes check-up six years after her son's birth, a gap highlighting gaps in postnatal support systems.
