Two-year-old found in grit bin after going missing at nursery
The toddler was unaccounted for nearly an hour due to supervision failures and unlocked grit bin access; he was hospitalized with elevated salt levels but later discharged.
- On January 16, the two-year-old went missing for around an hour before his mother arrived shortly before 12pm and he was found inside a closed grit bin at Maybury Primary Early Learning and Childcare Centre, staff said.
- Following a child meeting in November, staff agreed the 'tag-team' system should cover him, but it was discontinued without parental consent, and CCTV gaps around the grit bin were reported. The child had previously been identified as lacking safety awareness and played with the grit bin despite warnings.
- Found cold and covered in grit, the two-year-old boy was taken to A&E where tests found elevated salt levels in his blood and he was discharged later the same day.
- Edinburgh Council and the Care Inspectorate confirmed the incident was reported and immediate steps taken, including CCTV, extra outdoor staff, a locked grit bin, and the mother has kept her son home last week due to lost trust.
- After waiting 15 minutes at pickup, the mother was told police had been contacted and nursery staff could not account for his absence, so she is demanding independent reviews since no one admitted what went wrong.
