Two-year-old found in grit bin after going missing at nursery

  • On January 16, a two-year-old boy at Maybury Primary Early Learning and Childcare Centre, Turnhouse Road, Edinburgh, was missing for about an hour and found inside a grit bin on the playground before police were called.
  • An agreed `tag-team supervision` system required staff to notify each other of the child’s movements, but the mother says it was discontinued without her consent.
  • His mother opened the grit bin and found the two-year-old boy curled in a foetal position, cold and shivering, then he was taken to A&E where elevated salt levels were found and he was discharged the same day.
  • A spokesperson said the Care Inspectorate was notified and the City of Edinburgh Council said urgent steps include CCTV, extra staff outside, and the grit bin secured and monitored.
  • After initially returning to the nursery last week, the 36-year-old mother has kept her child at home, demanding answers as CCTV footage either did not cover the grit bin or wasn’t working that day.
