Suspect Dead, 2 Officers Hurt After Pursuit Ends in Gunfire in Newington
Police said the officers are in stable condition after an exchange of gunfire left the suspect dead and a gun recovered.
- On Friday at 11 p.m., a multi-town pursuit ended in a shootout on Webster Court in Newington, leaving a suspect dead and two police officers injured. The incident began after a suspect fled on foot from 9 Fales Street in Hartford.
- Hartford Police Department officers investigating illegal activity at 9 Fales Street attempted to detain a suspect who broke free and fled in a vehicle. Police pursued the suspect south before stopping the vehicle near the Rocky Hill town line.
- Officer Alex Diaz of the Hartford Police and a Rocky Hill Police Department officer were shot during the exchange of gunfire. Both were transported to a hospital in stable condition and have since been released to recover at home.
- "Devastated" by the incident, Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam said, "Our hearts and thoughts are with the injured officers and their families." Rocky Hill Mayor Allan Smith expressed relief the Rocky Hill officer is recovering at home.
- The Office of Inspector General has assumed the investigation, according to police, who recovered a firearm at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased suspect, while U.S. Rep. John Larson called for a full investigation.
