First Responders and Others Rescued in Rio Grande
DOÑA ANA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO, JUN 30 – Four people were rescued without injury after floodwaters swept a pickup into the Rio Grande, with multiple agencies coordinating the two-hour rescue effort, officials said.
- On June 30, several agencies responded to rescue two individuals after their pickup was carried off the road and into the Rio Grande close to Highway 185 and Bignell Arroyo, just north of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
- Heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to wash the truck off the road and trap the driver on the roof of his submerged vehicle, prompting an urgent rescue response.
- Doña Ana Fire Rescue, Las Cruces Fire Department, Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue, Sierra County Swift Water teams, and other agencies coordinated the rescue efforts, including carrying out boat-based searches upstream.
- Deputy Chief Yvonne Feijoo credited the prompt collaboration among several agencies for ensuring the safe rescue of all individuals involved, with no injuries reported among victims or responders.
- The submerged truck remains in the river and will require removal, while authorities reminded the public to avoid flooded roadways during the monsoon season to prevent similar incidents.
