Two more people arrested over 'infamous' illegal dump site in Kidlington

The arrests bring the total to six as investigators trace responsibility for about 22,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste.

  • On Tuesday, the Environment Agency arrested a 21-year-old from Ashford and a 43-year-old from Stanwell in connection with an illegal waste dump near Kidlington, bringing total arrests in the investigation to six. Both men were released on conditional bail.
  • Last month, the Environment Agency completed a five-month cleanup removing 22,105 tonnes of commercial and household waste, costing about £6 million. The operation addressed environmental risks posed by the site's proximity to the River Cherwell and A34.
  • The National Environmental Crime Unit, supported by Surrey Police, led the investigation into an 8,000-square-metre site larger than Wembley Stadium. Drone footage captured the tip, which reached 150 metres long and 6 metres high.
  • Area Environment Manager Colin Chiverton called the dumping "abhorrent," stating these arrests represent a "vital step in collecting new evidence and delivering justice for the residents of Kidlington." His comments underscore the investigation's ongoing priority.
  • Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle pledged to put "criminal gangs on notice" through increased frontline officers and drone surveillance to catch offenders. This enforcement strategy signals a broader government crackdown on waste crime across England.
