Two more in court charged over protest outside asylum-seeker hotel in Epping
EPPING, ESSEX, ENGLAND, JUL 29 – The Crown Prosecution Service has charged nine men so far in connection with protests triggered by allegations against an asylum seeker, with 23 arrests made by Essex Police.
- Tuesday saw new charges against plasterer Phillip Curson, 52, and Martin Peagram, 33, at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court, increasing the total to 14.
- Amid mounting protests at The Bell Hotel, Kebatu was charged with sexual assault, prompting demonstrations since July 13.
- Essex Police reported violence escalating during protests on July 17, with incidents against police and property, injuring eight officers and damaging police vehicles.
- Courts granted six men conditional bail until August 26 with an electronic curfew after being accused of violent disorder at Epping hotel.
- Next, a hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court is scheduled for September 24, 2025, while defendants are due to face trial later this year.
