Two men on trial over murder of disgraced Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins

Prosecutors say one defendant stabbed Watkins with a homemade knife while the other disposed of it after a 20-second attack, jurors heard.

  • Two men, Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth, are on trial at Leeds Crown Court for murdering former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins, who was stabbed to death in his cell at HMP Wakefield on October 11, 2025.
  • Prosecutor Tom Storey KC told the jury Watkins received two threatening notes the day before, accusing him of getting another inmate kicked off the wing and demanding money with threats of violence.
  • CCTV footage showed Gedel entering Watkins' cell for 20 seconds to inflict three stab wounds with a homemade blade, then handing the weapon to Dodsworth, who disposed of it in a bin.
  • Jurors heard Gedel appeared 'perky' after the attack and allegedly told officers 'have a good night's sleep, Watkins lad' while passing the cell, as Dodsworth allegedly acted as a lookout.
  • Both defendants deny murder and possession of a makeshift knife; Dodsworth claimed in his police interview he was not involved and merely disposed of the blade in panic.
