Two Jailed for Conspiracy to Smuggle 10 People to UK
Eoin Nolan and Daniel Loughran received prison sentences after charging £150,000 to smuggle 10 Vietnamese nationals, including eight children, concealed in lorry tyres, officials said.
- On Thursday at Maidstone Crown Court, Eoin Nolan, 53, and Daniel Loughran, 36, were jailed for plotting to smuggle ten Vietnamese nationals, including eight children, hidden in a lorry loaded with worn-out tyres.
- Investigators found the scheme was driven by profit, with the organised crime group taking £150,000 from vulnerable migrants, charging about £15,000 each and paying drivers £25,000 for the route via France and Belgium.
- The operation was uncovered when Belgian authorities stopped the lorry on December 5 at Gentbrugge parking area and found ten migrants hiding between worn-out tyres, with driver Duncan McLaughlin, 64, from Glasgow convicted.
- Judge records show the two men received custodial terms: Daniel Loughran got five-and-a-half years and Eoin Nolan four years, though Nolan has already served time; the Crown Prosecution Service condemned their risks to children and border checks.
- Prosecutors say the convictions form part of wider action against people-smuggling, with Wayne Sherlock pleading guilty in June 2020 and the National Crime Agency noting the plot came months after the tragic deaths of 39 migrants.
