Two Latvian men bailed after arrest at RAF base
Counter Terrorism Policing London is investigating after officers found an abandoned vehicle, a fence breach and two arrests at the base.
On Thursday, two Latvian men aged 32 and 36 were arrested at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire after a fence breach was discovered. Both were later released on bail with "strict conditions" while investigations continue.
Ministry of Defence Police security patrols identified an abandoned vehicle near the base perimeter at about 22:00 BST on Wednesday, prompting a search that uncovered a small fence breach early Thursday.
Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation and upgraded charges to "entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK" under the National Security Act after initial trespass and criminal damage arrests.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated there is nothing "so far" to suggest a connection to RAF Fairford incidents last month. Officers also searched two addresses in Peterborough as part of the inquiry.
RAF Molesworth houses a NATO intelligence hub and United States intelligence operations centers for Europe and Africa, supporting the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Allied Command Operations responsible for planning military operations.
