Two killed in ambush on Manipur highway

  • On Saturday, two Tangkhul Naga civilians, Chinaoshang Shokwungnao and Yaruingam Vashum, were killed when suspected militants ambushed vehicles on the Imphal-Ukhrul road near Yaolen Kuki village.
  • Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Ukhrul district on Friday to foster dialogue between Tangkhul and Kuki communities, just one day before the attack.
  • At least four vehicles were damaged in the ambush; the state government had recently begun providing security escorts to civilians in Litan following intermittent violence.
  • The Working Committee of Tangkhul Naga Long alleged Kuki SoO rebels carried out the attack, while the Kuki-Zo Council denied involvement of any Kuki-Zo individuals or groups.
  • Relations between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki-Zo communities in Ukhrul have remained strained since violence erupted in Litan in early February, displacing hundreds of village residents.
