Two Guardia Civil Officers Killed in Spain Maritime Drug Trafficking Pursuit
- On Friday, a Guardia Civil officer, Germ, died when two patrol boats collided during a high-speed pursuit approximately 80 miles off the Huelva coast near Punta Umbr and Mazag. Two of the three injured officers suffered serious wounds.
- Following the collision, the Navy assisted with towing the damaged vessels due to sinking risks, while a customs helicopter arrived to support the scene. The incident involved the 13-metre patrol boat Antas and a seized semi-rigid 'rubber' boat.
- Ironically, the officer's death occurred as the Minister of the Interior boasted of striking the "heart of the Atlantic maritime drug routes" with a record 30-tonne cocaine interception. This timing demonstrates the dangerous risks inherent in ongoing anti-drug operations.
- Security forces have faced recurring tragedies, including the death of two officers on February 9, 2024, in Barbate, Cadiz, after a speedboat ran them over. Another narco-boat occupant died in February 2025 during a pursuit at the Guadalquivir river.
- The Minister also presented a "significant strategic leap" in operations, citing an international effort that seized 11 tonnes of cocaine and 8.5 tonnes of hashish. These efforts demonstrate the intense, high-risk environment of maritime drug interdiction in Spain.
