12-Year-Old Boy, Mother Killed in Akron Shooting; Suspect in Custody

On Saturday night, a shooting in Akron left a 47-year-old mother and her 12-year-old son dead; 28-year-old Brandon T. Casto turned himself in at the Meigs County Sheriff's office after attempting to flee.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls near 30 West Wilbeth Road, discovering a vehicle crashed into a tree with victims inside. A 2-year-old boy, also the woman's son, was found uninjured in the vehicle.
Detectives identified Casto through a 911 caller who fled the scene. The Akron Police Department executed a search warrant, recovering multiple firearms, firearm accessories, and a "large collection of ammunition," according to investigators.
"Tragedies like this extend far beyond those directly involved," said Akron Police Chief Brian Harding. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik expressed heartbreak, commending police for swift work in apprehending the suspect.
Casto is currently held at the Southeast Regional Jail in Nelsonville, facing two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault. The Akron Police Major Crimes Unit investigation remains ongoing.
