Two children die in horror car crash after pram hit
On Wednesday, two children aged 1 and 5 died after a car struck their pram at the intersection of Joseph and Gilbert Street in Cabramatta just after 3pm.
A 33-year-old woman, believed to be the children's mother, was pushing the pram when it was struck by the vehicle and was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Motorists desperately lifted the SUV onto its side to rescue a trapped child; Superintendent Timothy Calman called it "one of the most confronting scenes," while Janie Barrett described the community response as "phenomenal."
Police arrested the uninjured 56-year-old driver and took him to hospital for mandatory testing, while the Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene at the site.
The Cumberland Highway remains closed in Cabramatta between John Street and Cabramatta Road, and authorities are preparing a report for the coroner regarding the incident.
