Two building collapses claim five lives in Kano
Firefighters rescued 10 people alive as investigators examined whether safety lapses contributed to the collapses, the fire service said.
- On Saturday, two building collapses in Kano State left five people dead and 10 others injured, according to the Kano State Fire Service. Emergency responders attended separate incidents in Kumbotso Local Government Area and Fagge Local Government Area.
- The first collapse struck a construction site in Gaida, Kumbotso LGA, while the second occurred at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya school in Kurna, Fagge LGA. Distress calls reached the emergency unit at 2:34 pm and 2:40 pm.
- Four construction workers—Sunusi Surajo, 18, Bashir Ibrahim, 20, Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25, and Abubakar, 30—died at the Gaida site. In Kurna, rescuers saved eight students, though 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad was later confirmed dead.
- All victims were transported to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for medical attention. Survivors were subsequently handed over to school headmaster Muhammad Gambo Usman, while police received the deceased at the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.
- The Kano State Fire Service is investigating the causes of both structural failures. Public Relations Officer ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi urged contractors and property owners to strictly adhere to building safety standards.
