The Pegida demonstration scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Assen was banned at the last minute. The radical right-wing activist group wanted to burn a Koran at the courthouse, but according to Mayor Marco Out, safety could "no longer be guaranteed."

The municipality of Assen has banned a demonstration by the Pegida group. Leader Edwin Wagensveld intended to burn a Koran in front of the courthouse in the center of the Drenthe capital. "Based on new information from the police, we cannot guarantee the safety of the demonstration," the municipality announced prior to the demonstration.
