Two Americans sentenced to prison for North Korean tech worker scheme
The scheme placed North Korean workers on U.S. payrolls and generated millions yearly for Pyongyang, the Justice Department said.
- On Wednesday, a Boston federal court sentenced two New Jersey men for operating a covert scheme that defrauded major U.S. companies while generating $5 million for the North Korean regime. Zhenxing Danny Wang received over seven years in prison, and Kejia Tony Wang was sentenced to nine years.
- Operating from their homes, Wang and Wang managed 'laptop farms'—clusters of company-issued computers hosted overseas workers. These machines allowed North Korean IT workers to remotely log in, impersonating U.S.-based employees while stealing identities of at least 80 Americans.
- More than 100 U.S. companies were targeted, including Fortune 500 firms and a California-based defense contractor. The operation provided overseas workers access to draw salaries and, in one case, steal export-controlled data from the defense firm.
- The State Department offered up to $5 million on Wednesday for information on other individuals involved in generating revenue for the North Korean regime. Officials continue warning companies about evolving threats from North Korean IT workers seeking to infiltrate systems.
- North Korea increasingly uses such schemes to circumvent sanctions and fund its nuclear weapons program. Experts warn that North Korean IT workers continue embedding themselves at subcontractors to reach larger, sensitive targets with government contracts.
