Defence of Europe's Eastern Flank an 'Immediate' Priority: Eight EU Leaders
EU leaders at the Finland summit pledged enhanced defense for Ukraine with US security support and discussed managing $20 billion in frozen Russian assets, officials said.
- In Finland's capital, prime ministers from Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and Lithuania held a one-day summit, unveiling detailed security guarantees for Ukraine.
- Because Russia is described as a long-term threat, leaders prioritized eastern defence and included frozen Russian assets held in Belgium and peace negotiations to end Russia's war in Ukraine on the agenda.
- Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said `We need to do more together, and we want to send a clear and strong signal from here that we need to do more together and in close coordination with the European Union and NATO`, emphasizing ongoing cooperation after Berlin talks, he added, `Yesterday in Berlin, Ukraine, Europe and the US showed so that if we work together, if we act together, we are stronger.`
- The summit produced immediate defence commitments with European forces ready and a firm American backstop, but operational details and the future of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories remain unresolved.
- Berlin negotiations gave momentum, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, hailed progress after two days of talks in Berlin and said a peace proposal would be ready to present to Moscow in a few days.
