Turkish court convicts Istanbul mayor of insulting an official
ISTANBUL, TURKEY, JUL 16 – Imamoglu was sentenced amid a crackdown on opposition mayors and faces over seven years in prison and political bans, threatening his eligibility for the 2028 elections, rights groups say.
- On Wednesday, the main opposition CHP suspended two mayors after expelling a deputy mayor caught taking bribes.
- Corruption probes in CHP-run municipalities grew nationwide since late last year, prompting the party to act, with several mayors detained or arrested, all in Turkey.
- Speaking to Habertürk, Özgür Özel said he was `ashamed` of nominating the deputy mayor involved in bribery allegations, noting bribes hidden in a box of baklava.
- Through his lawyer, Niyazi Nefi Kara insisted the CHP was `his family` and that suspension came `under extraordinary circumstances`.
- Earlier this month, Özgür Özel, CHP leader, reiterated that the deputy mayor was a victim of a conspiracy, contradicting his later admission of shame.
