Turkey's Erdogan tells Trump issues with Iran can be resolved, Ankara says
Erdogan said contested issues with Iran could be resolved as Turkey prepared for a July NATO summit in Ankara, the presidency said.
On Wednesday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told President Donald Trump he welcomed the extension of a ceasefire between Trump and Iran, believing contested issues between the sides could be resolved.
Turkey, a NATO member neighboring Iran, has maintained close contact with Washington, Tehran, and Pakistan to mediate an end to the war, calling for conflict resolution and passing messages between the sides.
During the call, Erdogan termed stability in Syria an 'important gain' and urged preventative steps regarding the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
President Trump later characterized the discussion as 'very good,' praising the diplomatic relationship and calling Erdogan a 'great ally' despite noting some skepticism from others.
Ankara continues preparations for the NATO Summit in July while Trump previously stated negotiations with Iran were 'in the final stages,' signaling ongoing diplomatic momentum.
