TURKEY AND THE BALKANS, JUL 29 – Poor waste management and record heat have fueled hundreds of wildfires across Turkey and the Balkans, forcing over 3,500 evacuations and leading to nearly 100 prosecutions, officials said.
- On July 27, 2025, Turkey battled at least 44 fires around Bursa, forcing more than 3,500 people to evacuate and leaving two dead.
- Unseasonably high temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds have fueled the wildfires, with record-breaking heat waves sweeping the eastern Mediterranean region.
- On Monday, authorities had extinguished 269 fires, and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said 3,515 people had been evacuated from Bursa villages.
- On Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that 99 suspects face prosecution and the government declared Izmir and Bilecik disaster areas.
