Turkey spends £2.25bn on AI-powered MOT system
The overhaul adds cameras, sensors and a central digital platform to assess results, with the Istanbul pilot lab training staff and testing equipment.
- Turkey is rebuilding its 20-year-old vehicle inspection system as part of a £2.25 billion transformation, integrating AI, automation, and contactless technology to modernize national safety standards.
- The MOI Joint Venture Group won the 2025 international tender to lead the overhaul, bringing together Turkey's MetGün Group, US-based Opus Group , and international partners.
- At the Istanbul Pilot Centre, a 2,500 square metre testing ground uses AI-assisted imaging, contactless sensors, and high-resolution cameras to measure tire tread, scan underbodies, and automate detailed vehicle inspections.
- Until August 15, 2027, the Istanbul Pilot Centre will operate as a laboratory, testing software and training staff before new standards are rolled out across Turkey for nationwide implementation.
- The project offers the United Kingdom a large-scale model as the DVSA researches future MOT systems and explores how digital technology could integrate into vehicle testing nationwide.
