Turkey sack national team coach Montella, football federation says
The federation ended Montella’s three-year tenure after four straight UEFA Nations League losses and a group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On Friday, the Turkish Football Federation dismissed national team head coach Vincenzo Montella, announcing on X, "It has been decided not to continue with our head coach."
The dismissal follows four consecutive defeats in the UEFA Nations League, including a 3-1 loss to Italy on Tuesday, and Turkey's early group-stage elimination from the 2026 World Cup despite beating the United States.
Despite boasting elite talent including Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, Real Madrid's Arda Guler, and Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, the team's performance has deteriorated significantly in recent months.
Turkey faces immediate pressure to appoint a successor before hosting Belgium in the Nations League on November 12 and traveling to France three days later without a head coach.
Montella, appointed in September 2023, previously guided Turkey to the 2024 European Championship quarter-finals before results declined following a 2-1 loss to the Netherlands, marking a sharp reversal in his tenure.
