Since the arrest of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, on 19 March 2025, the great municipality of Istanbul, its boroughs and other cities held by the opposition are in the sight of justice. Friday, 15 August, it is the turn of the mayor of the district of Beyoglu, the most central of Istanbul, to be accused of "corruption", as well as 43 other employees of his town hall.
Among those arrested are several municipal employees and other relatives of the mayor who, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, are suspected of “running a criminal organization for profit, extortion, and bribery”
The arrests in the vicinity of the Turkish opposition party CHP continue. Once again, an Istanbul district mayor was established. In March, the state action had triggered major protests.

This new wave of interrogations for "corruption" is part of the continuation of the arrests targeting the Republican People's Party (CHP, Social Democrat) for months.
