Reported assaults on Britain's rail services rise by more than a third
The regulator said harassment and common assault made up most cases as reported attacks on passengers and rail workers rose across Britain.
- On Thursday, the Office of Rail and Road reported 13,464 assaults against passengers and the public on Britain's mainline railways, representing a 36% increase from the previous year and the highest number since 2004.
- Of these recorded incidents, 6,390 involved verbal abuse, 2,487 were physical assaults, and 2,412 were threats; harassment increased 52% and common assaults rose 30% over the previous year.
- The London Underground network recorded 5,534 assaults, a 20% rise, while 11,289 reported assaults targeted mainline railway workforce members, a 12% increase; London Underground staff saw a 3% decrease.
- Richard Hines, the ORR's chief inspector of railways, called the rising trend "concerning" and stated, "No-one on the railway should be subjected to violence, threats or abuse."
- The increase follows five years of rising reports and industry awareness campaigns; the statistical release also noted 11 members of the public died at mainline level crossings in the latest year.
