Trump's immigration approval drops to record low, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds

A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows 58% of Americans say ICE has gone too far amid protests and two fatal shootings by immigration agents in Minneapolis.

  • The latest poll, conducted between Jan. 23 and Jan. 25, finds just 39% approve and 53% disapprove of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, the lowest approval since his return to the White House from 1,139 U.S. adults with a 3-point margin of error.
  • The deaths in Minneapolis followed the Jan. 24 shooting of Alex Pretti, 37-year-old ICU nurse, and the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Good, 37-year-old, by Border Patrol and ICE during immigration deployments.
  • Survey data show about 58% of poll respondents say U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have `gone too far`, with nine in 10 Democrats versus two in 10 Republicans, and 37% favoring the Republican Party's immigration approach over 32% for Democrats.
  • Political consequences have included Trump sending border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirming agent reductions and independent investigations, Chris Madel quitting the governor's race, and at least 120 Democrats backing impeachment of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
  • Looking ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, Reuters says the poll underscores a potential shift that could reshape politics as Trump’s February 2025 immigration approval was 50%.
