Trump May Raise Jimmy Lai’s Release in Talks With Xi
Sebastien Lai says his family hopes Trump raises the jailed activist’s case in talks with Xi, after officials previously discussed his release.
Over 100 U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to the White House on Thursday urging Trump to secure Jimmy Lai's release during his anticipated trip to Beijing next week to meet Chinese President Jinping.
Lai, a 78-year-old pro-democracy activist, has spent over five years in custody in Hong Kong after being sentenced to 20 years in prison under the security law for conspiracy charges.
Trump raised Lai's case with Jinping in October, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent subsequently mentioned it in trade talks, with Mark Clifford noting that Chinese officials have "noted" the issue without pushback.
Releasing Lai would allow China to demonstrate readiness to move forward, similar to pastor David Lin's 2024 release after nearly 20 years in Chinese prison, offering Trump an administration diplomatic win.
Sebastien Lai, based in London, fears his father will die in prison, calling it "a lose-lose scenario for every single person," while experts note China's harder stance under Jinping versus predecessor Jintao on prisoner releases.
