- Two major teachers unions responded that the coalition is unserious and excluded traditional civics education groups, while leading civics organizations said they were unaware of the coalition and stressed nonpartisan education.
- Earlier in September the U.S. Education Department said it would invest more than $160 million in civics grants, a $137 million increase, and a department official said the coalition will not receive federal funding or set curricula.
