Trump undertakes a MAGA-centric makeover of US civics education
The coalition includes over 40 conservative groups and plans more than 100 events nationwide, with $160 million in grants boosting patriotic civics education.
- Last month, the U.S. Education Department announced the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, organized by the America First Policy Institute with more than 40 groups including the Heritage Foundation and Turning Point USA, planning more than 100 events.
- Drawing on past efforts, the 1776 Commission established by President Trump is echoed by the coalition, which the department official said last month promotes a patriotic vision downplaying historical wrongs.
- Among members, PragerU faces scrutiny for content accuracy, America First Legal and Stephen Miller-linked figures form part of the coalition, and Education Secretary Linda McMahon previously chaired the America First Policy Institute board.
- Two major teachers unions responded that the coalition is unserious and excluded traditional civics education groups, while leading civics organizations said they were unaware of the coalition and stressed nonpartisan education.
- Earlier in September the U.S. Education Department said it would invest more than $160 million in civics grants, a $137 million increase, and a department official said the coalition will not receive federal funding or set curricula.
