- On Monday, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation amending Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminium, and copper imports, effective June 8. The measures lower duties on select agricultural and industrial equipment while incentivizing the use of US-produced materials.
- Trump stated the changes aim to support domestic manufacturing and agriculture while maintaining protections for US metals producers under the Trade Expansion Act. The move modifies the 50 percent tariff regime imposed in April 2026 through Proclamation 11021.
- The proclamation lowers duties on farm equipment to 15 percent until Dec 31, 2027, while reducing the effective rate to 10 percent for derivative products containing at least 85 percent US "melted and poured" steel or "smelted and cast" aluminium.
- For products from Japan, South Korea, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan, the total effective tariff rate is capped at 15 percent. Qualifying imports from Canada and Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement face 25 percent tariffs on non-US content.
- The White House cited projects including an Oklahoma smelter backed by Century Aluminum and Emirates Global Aluminum, plus expansions by Rio Tinto, Highland Copper, and Ivanhoe Electric, as evidence of efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity.
