Trump says it will be up to Ukraine to decide on territorial swaps
Trump emphasized Ukraine's sole authority on territorial swaps and warned Putin of severe economic consequences if the war continues, ahead of their first summit since 2022 conflict began.
- On Friday, US President Donald Trump said Ukraine would decide on land swaps during his trip to Anchorage for the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Before the summit, Trump spoke by phone with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close Putin ally, to discuss Putin’s Alaska visit and to thank him for releasing 16 prisoners, urging release of 1,300 more.
- Traveling aboard Air Force One, Trump said `security guarantees for Ukraine are possible along with Europe and other countries` but `not in the form of NATO`, adding membership `is not going to happen`.
- Reacting online, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Trump to press Moscow to end its invasion, after Trump posted `HIGH STAKES!!!` on Truth Social.
- This high-stakes summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson could shape the trajectory of the Russia-Ukraine war, as it marks the first US-Russian presidential talks since February 2022.
