Crowther, who saved an estimated 18 strangers in the World Trade Center, was honored ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
- On Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, President Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Welles Crowther at a "Steel Across America" event on the Ellipse in Washington.
- Known as the "Man in the Red Bandana," Crowther was a 24-year-old equities trader and volunteer firefighter who saved an estimated 18 strangers from the World Trade Center's south tower before dying in the building's collapse.
- Using his red bandana to breathe, Crowther guided victims down from the 78th floor in three separate trips. Trump called his actions "epic" heroism during the ceremony.
- Alison Crowther and Paige Crowther Charbonneau accepted the award from Trump. "His story encompasses the spectrum," Alison Crowther said, adding, "After all these years, people are still loving him."
- The presentation occurs ahead of the 25th anniversary of the terror attacks. Trump is skipping the main memorial ceremony at Ground Zero on Thursday but plans to speak at the Pentagon.
