New Maryland defense shipyard gets $6.6 billion commitment and Trump visit
The project is expected to create 3,100 jobs and will make Virginia-class submarine components under a $2.9 billion Navy contract.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump attended a ceremony unveiling Anduril Industries' plans for a $3.7 billion shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland, expected to generate 3,100 jobs.
The Navy awarded Anduril a $2.9 billion contract for submarine components, part of a broader $6.6 billion push to expand arms production following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East.
Trump claimed "American taxpayers will receive a 40% stake in the new shipyard," while Maryland and Baltimore County committed about $481 million in matching funds for the project.
This project aligns President Trump with Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat, while General Dynamics' Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries remain primary submarine builders for the Navy.
The Arsenal-2 plant is expected to be operational by the end of the decade, complementing Anduril's $1 billion Arsenal-1 facility in Ohio and its California operations producing Virginia-class components.
