Putin Will only Meet with Zelensky to Sign Off on Peace Deal, Kremlin Says
ISTANBUL, TURKEY, JUL 25 – A trilateral meeting to finalize peace talks depends on progress, with Russia demanding conditions and Ukraine seeking direct talks, officials said.
- When asked by reporters on Friday, President Trump said he might be in the room if Putin and Zelensky meet, adding `It's going to happen` without a timeframe.
- Earlier this month, Trump threatened up to 100% secondary tariffs on Russia’s trading partners, setting a 50-day deadline for a deal by early September.
- During this week's talks in Turkey, Ukraine and Russia agreed to more prisoner exchanges but failed to secure a ceasefire, and Kyiv proposed an August leaders meeting to meet the deadline.
- With conditions attached, Russia demanded Ukraine lift martial law and hold elections within 100 days, while also raising concerns over Zelensky’s legal authority.
- According to Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin has not ruled out a meeting but insists groundwork is needed and added it’s unlikely to occur by the end of August.
